Combating Chemical Dependency – A Community Effort

Tonight, Dr. Brad Bundy (DO, Blanchard Valley Psychiatric Associates) will be a guest presenter for the Combating Chemical Dependence: A Community Effort series beginning at 6:00 p.m. in University of Findlay, College of Pharmacy, Davis Street Building, Room 102. All community members are welcome and encouraged to attend. Dr. Bundy is an engaging presenter who will skillfully explain some of the medical and biological fundamentals of the brain which will greatly facilitate a better understanding of the complex interplay between neurology and addiction.

Grease is the Word for 8th Annual Red Cross Gala

Hollywood comes to Hancock County on Saturday, February 25th, for the State Bank Oscar Night gala to benefit the American Red Cross of Hancock County. State Bank Oscar Night; Grease is the Word! will be held 7-11:30 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1050 Interstate West in Findlay. Upscale dining and desserts prepared by the area’s top chefs. Time Warp DJ Service. Live and silent auctions. All-inclusive tickets are $100 each, which includes dining and open bar. Community Gardens Applications Being Accepted

The Community Gardens of Hancock County is gearing up for its seventh year. The gardens are located at the Family Center, 1800 N. Blanchard St. and will have more than 60 plots available. The Community Gardens are open for anyone to apply, but low- to moderate-income families or those on assistance are especially encouraged to apply and will be given preference. Agencies, organizations, churches or youth groups that want to grow a plot and donate at least a portion of the produce to those serving food to insecure families may apply as well.Applications will be accepted through Feb. 28. Applications can be filled out online here.

HHWP CAC’s Micro Business Development Program Starting Soon

Recruitment is underway to enroll participants in the next Micro Business Development Program offered by the HHWP Community Action Commission. The program consists of 13 sessions held from 5:45-8:45 p.m. on Thursday beginning March 2, 2017. Each session will be held at the Findlay-Hancock County Chamber of Commerce, 123 E. Main Cross St., Findlay. The final session will be June 1, 2017. The program is designed for individuals interested in starting their own business, owners of existing businesses and others who just want to learn about business. The program fee is $100. 2017 Symposium on Sustainability in Health Care to be Held in Cincinnati

A keynote luncheon on Tuesday, March 28 will be held at Sharonville Convention Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The luncheon will feature experts on sustainably-based Clinical Operation and Healthcare Leadership Sustainability Perspectives, plus a trade show with exhibitors focusing on the Healthcare Industry. Valentines at the McKinnis House: Open House – Visit the McKinnis House at Litzenberg Memorial Woods on Sunday, February 19 from 1 to 4 pm. to learn about the history of Valentine’s Day and what it was like in 1847.
Romance Among the Night Skies – A planetarium program that looks at love and romance among the constellations and planets will take place on Wednesday, February 22 at 7 p.m. at Oakwoods Nature Preserve’s Discovery Center. Recommended for ages 8 and up. Free program. Register by Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Local Red Cross Volunteer Joining Louisiana Relief Effort

A local Red Cross disaster relief volunteer is joining the effort to help those affected by tornadoes that struck southeast Louisiana on Tuesday, Feb. 7. Karl Gingrich of Findlay will be serving as a Red Cross Staff Services Supervisor, overseeing the deployment of Red Cross workers responding to the disaster.

John and Tamara Luchini Fund for the Performing Arts Announced

The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the John and Tamara Luchini Fun for the Performing Arts. An amateur thespian and life-long musician, John Luchini was an avid supporter of performing arts, including theater, musicals, and opera during his lifetime. Upon his death, St. Wendelin created the John Luchini Drama Award in his memory. The award honors two St. Wendelin seniors who have made significant contributions to the drama program. BVHS Awarded Grant to Fund Around the Clock Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Services

Blanchard Valley Health System has been awarded a grant from the Ohio Attorney General’s Office to support sexual assault victim assistance services available to the community. The grant, which totaled $192,880.58, will be used to support a part-time sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) coordinator position, SANE nurse training, medical equipment, and 24-7 SANE nurse coverage at BVHS.

Author Sean Covey to Visit Hancock County

“The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” by the late Stephen R. Covey, has been chosen as the featured book for the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library’s 2017 CommunityREAD. Accompanying YouthREAD titles are “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teams” and “The 7 Habits of Happy Kids,” by Sean Covey. Sean Covey will visit Hancock County on Thursday, March 16, during CommunityREAD month for a public presentation at 7 p.m. at the Marathon Center. This year’s selection is part of a unique partnership between the library, Raise the Bar Hancock County, and city and county schools to bring the concepts of the 7 Habits family of books to Findlay and Hancock County. Copies of the books are available for loan at the library. Tickets for the Sean Covey event are available at www.marathoncenterarts.org.

Free Tax Preparation Appointments to Serve Eligible Hancock County Residents

For the ninth year in a row, United Way of Hancock County is partnering with local businesses to offer free tax preparation services on various dates at locations throughout the community. Free tax preparation services are for individuals who made up to $65,000 and families who made up to $95,000 in 2016. To schedule an appointment at the Findlay-Hancock County Library or Millstream Career Center, callers should dial 2-1-1, or dial 1.800.650.HELP(4357). Individuals interested in being trained to become an OBB volunteer tax counselor should visit http://support.ohiobenefits.org/taxes.html#training  for online training. Local Red Cross Volunteer Joins Tornado Relief Effort

A local Red Cross disaster relief volunteer is joining the effort to help those affected by a series of deadly tornadoes in the South. Dr. Brandy Truelove of Vanlue will be serving as a Red Cross caseworker, helping families assess their needs and providing assistance, resources and referrals to aid their recovery. Truelove will be reporting to Red Cross operational headquarters in Hattiesburg, MS, and is assigned for a two-week deployment.

Garner Trucking Driver of the Year Selected to Serve on America’s Road Team

American Trucking Associations has named Gary Smith, Garner Trucking Driver of the Year (2015) as 1 of 20 professional drivers to the 2017-2018 America’s Road Team – an elite group of professionals who serve as trucking industry ambassadors.
