Hancock County Safety Council Earns $62,578.85 in Safety Discounts
(FINDLAY, Ohio, January 21, 2010)—Hancock County area businesses are among the thousands of Ohio employers that shared millions in savings through the recent Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) Safety Council Discount Program. Locally, over $62,578 was reinvested into the business community by those earning a “Performance Bonus” through the Hancock County Safety Council, a division of GreaterFindlayInc.’s Chamber of Commerce. This bonus is given to those Safety Council employers that reduce either frequency or severity of claims by 10-percent or more below the previous year, or that maintain both frequency and severity at zero.
The BWC’s Division of Safety and Hygiene sponsors 80 statewide safety councils which inform participants of new safety techniques, products and services, and provide a thorough knowledge of topics, including occupational safety and health, workers’ compensation and risk management education. Aside from the Performance Bonus, eligible employers participating in last year’s Safety Council Discount Program had the opportunity to earn an initial two-percent premium discount. Members of the Hancock County Safety Council earned more than $94,000 on that discount alone.

Workplace Safety Web Courses
BWC’s Division of Safety & Hygiene is dedicated to meeting customers’ needs for occupational safety and health training. The division’s training center offers many resources, including *Web-based training classes.
Employees can learn in their own work environment at their own pace,
choosing a window of learning time when work is not adversely affected. This reduces travel time to zero, and saves travel expenses and time away from the job.

Safety Leader's Discussion Guide
Annually, the Division of Safety & Hygiene publishes the Safety Leader's Discussion Guide. The monthly articles are written in a style that encourages participation and interaction and includes lists of additional resources. For the first time this year, DSH accepted submissions from the public and staff to create the guide.
Monthly 2009 Discussion Guide topics include: job safety analysis, computer workstation ergonomics training, traffic control/flaggers, hand tool safety, safety on the road, preventing cuts and lacerations, combustible dust in the workplace, crisis plans for schools, asbestos awareness, protecting older workers, and safety management systems.

Here's what people are saying:
- I really enjoy the interactive programs.
- They continue to do a great job in scheduling relative topics.
- Outside speakers have been very informative.
- It is a well run program that provides ideas, and professional contacts with fellow safety professional.
- Hancock County Safety Council does an awesome job and I look forward to attending the meetings.
- Hancock County’s safety council program meetings are managed by dedicated individuals who have a passion for safety. I applaud these individuals who are "as busy" as everyone else, yet they DO take the time to plan and prepare for topics of interest for an audience that comes from a wide variety of businesses and needs. This mention is not a recommendation for improvement-- I just wanted to take time to mention these folks who sign up for an entire year of "extra work" and I thank them.
